Session Update: Today is scheduled to be the last day of the Special Session. However, due to the Senate Majority Coalition Caucus’ ongoing demands for policy bills that do not have anything to do with the budget, it is very unlikely that there will be a final decision on the budgets to allow for members to adjourn today.
We will send out an alert to notify HWC of the Second Special Session, which is expected to begin tomorrow. Tune in to the Governor’s Press Conference today at 10:30 am to learn more about next steps.
The Senate Majority is pushing a handful of bad policy bills. One is 5895 which many HWC members signed a letter in opposition because it puts an arbitrary cap on spending cap on all funding outside of eduction, and another is 5127 which would tempt injured workers over the age of 40 to settle for a lump sum buyout instead of regular payments in the workers’ comp system. Many advocates are very concerned that 5127 is harmful for injured workers at this age, with families, and potentially young children, because they would be tempted to take a settlement and compromise for a smaller up front lump sum which wouldn’t provide enough for workers to live on throughout the remainder of their life.
Advocates are very afraid that workers with families will spend through the lump sums they could be impoverished and end up coming back to the State for services necessary to survive – such as health care assistance, housing and food. This could have a potential impact on the general fund in future years, as well as leave working families with less financial support than they currently are eligible for. If you are interested in signing onto this letter, please email Kgarrow@wslc.org by NOON on Wed, June 12th.
